Menu (graphic)

Located on Galveston Island, TX, Star Pharmacy is a bit of an icon.  It was founded in 1909 and has been well-loved by each new generation.

I wanted to create the menu to reflect the feel of their classic drug store soda counter.  I used a black and white checkerboard floor image as a background, and then added a taupe layer to warm it up.  I used a layer mask to fade to the right opacity for legibility, and also kept enough of the bright red from the bar seats hinting through to pick up the red in the awning.  Next, I added three fonts which worked well together to list the menu items, descriptions, and prices.  I cut out vintage bottle caps and vintage pointing hands to add a little visual to the typography.  And what’s more American than the font “American Typewriter”?  I played with the type on the logo awning, added a black/white adjustment, and the vintage-feel menu was complete!
